Medeo is the name of a gorge near Almaty and also of an ice stadium and an anti-mudslide dam located in that gorge. The skating rink (built in 1972) is one of the largest mountain rinks in the world. 170 world records have been set on this rink. Its freezing system consists of 170 km of pipes and is able to make ice for 8 months a year and all the year round for race-tracks. The ice rink is open every day from 10:00 to 22:00 and from 10:00 to 15:00 at weekends. Rental skates are available but most of them are old-fashioned and worn out. Tel.: 502576, 502696.
You can get to Medeo by bus #6 or #204 (at weekends) from the bus stop on Kurmangazy and Dostyk Street (opposite the Kazakhstan Hotel). After 20:00 buses almost stop running. Minibuses and taxis run from the same bus stop. You will have to pay about 100-150 tenge for a seat in a minibus and 500-700 tenge to hire a taxi. These charges include an environment tax of 150 tenge, which is charged from every private car going to Medeo.
There are several restaurants and a decent hotel in Medeo. Telephones of the International Premier Medeo Hotel: 502007, 502357, 502264. Horse riding.
