Almaty or Alma-Ata as it called in Russia, is the biggest city in Kazakstan - ex republic of USSR. Till 1998 it was the capital of Kazakstan. Nowdays the capital is Astana (in kazak it means "capital"), and Almaty is calling "South Capital" (as St. Pitersberg is Russia's "North Capital").
